Ana Rocha, Senior Associate at CCA's Technology, Media and Telecommunications Department, writes an opinion piece for IT Channel magazine on the ethical challenges inherent to the measures adopted by governments to curb the spread of COVID-19 which, in many cases, involve the processing of personal data, including the location or sensitive data such as health data.
"It seems unquestionable the role that technology will play and, in particular, that of AI, in building solutions that help to fight against this and future epidemics. However, the ethical challenges in terms of processing personal data are enormous. There is an urgent need to reflect on the measures to be adopted and the society that we intend to (re) build. AI as the protagonist? We want it to present itself as a ’good’ protagonist and not as a ‘villain’", emphasizes Ana Rocha.
