Catarina Limpo Serra, Coordinator of the Litigation and Arbitration Department, writes an opinion piece for Jornal de Negócios on the regulation and fight against crime in sport, such as match-fixing or the manipulation of sports results, one of the most serious threats to the contemporary sport.
In view of this context, the European Council has adopted a legal reference instrument, the Treaty of the Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions (Macolin Convention), which aims to prevent, detect and punish the manipulation of national and international sports competitions. However, it has been open for signature since 2014 and has not yet been able to collect the signatures required to enter into force.
In Portugal, according to the lawyer, "we continue to make the mistake of deploying and creating more autonomous entities and adopting more separate legislation, when the proper solution is to create a single authority under government aegis, covering all unsportsmanlike phenomena (...)".
