Do you know why it's so difficult to investigate and punish illegal online gambling? The authorities face significant challenges in holding unlicensed gambling operators accountable, especially when they are based in non-cooperative territories.
In an opinion piece for Renascença, Filipe Mayer, Partner heading the Online Gambling practice at CCA Law Firm, explains how the investigation of these offences depends heavily on international co-operation. Filipe Mayer emphasises that while in a physical casino it is possible to seize material and detain suspects, in online gambling the platforms can simply disappear overnight. Furthermore, the need for outside organisations to intervene makes the process even more complex.
‘It's very difficult to carry out these investigations because they don't depend on national law enforcement. We have to ask outside organisations for help, we have to ask local authorities to act. And then our Public Prosecutor's Office is completely dependent on how these entities decide to act,’ emphasises the CCA lawyer
