Filipe Mayer, Partner at CCA Law Firm, speaking to Iberian Lawyer, comments on the progress and developments in the technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) sector, which, like no other field, has created new opportunities for law firms.
With the introduction and expansion of 5G and the strengthening of personal data protection through national legislation, new issues are emerging which justify a greater need for highly-specialized lawyers. According to Filipe Mayer, "it is precisely in the area of TMT & IT that we are witnessing a greater specialization of lawyers, which represents a huge opportunity for law professionals in this field". In Portugal, Online Gambling is precisely one of the fastest-growing areas of ultra-specialization, in which CCA now has a specially dedicated team of lawyers.
However, these developments also pose problems for law firms, which must now keep constantly up-to-date. "Indeed, the very concept of being up-to-date has changed, as the constant monitoring of technological developments has become more imperative than the legal regime in which they operate - in general, there is not even applicable law", says CCA's Partner.
