Henrique Salinas, Partner of CCA ONTIER's Criminal Law Area, spoke to Iberian Lawyer about the reluctance of many national companies to implement compliance programs, since it is not mandatory under Portuguese law.
'A legislative amendment would be extremely important in the transformation of their (Portuguese companies) mentalities', underlines Henrique Salinas. However, he added that 'we are now emerging from a long period of crisis in Portugal, and many of the companies do not have the financial resources to spend on compliance programs'.
However, international companies operating on national soil are boosting the demand for legal advice related to compliance issues, which leads law firms to recruit more and more, 'we needed more people focused only on compliance programs, specific teams', says Henrique Salinas.
