The debate over the four-day workweek model is not new, but the pandemic has accelerated this discussion and governments and companies around the world are already testing the reduction in the work week. Speaking to Pessoas by ECO magazine, Pedro Antunes, Partner at CCA's Labour Department, talks about the new model that is gaining followers in Portugal.
"There are those who defend the application of the four days a week model through legislation, that is to say transversally. Actually, the obstacle (if any) is not so much legislative considering that the State will have little power of intervention. The biggest obstacle will be the theme of profitability, that is, understanding how, by working less, workers will produce as much or, in some cases, more. It is therefore urgent to find other means of compensating for this decrease", underlines the CCA Partner.
Pedro Antunes, who took part in the debate "4-day workweek: privilege, risk or opportunity?" organized by Coverflex, states that "part of the Portuguese business fabric presents a very traditional management and organizational culture that is reluctant to change. Consequently, more than changing the legislation, it will be necessary to change models and mentalities in order to make it possible", adding that "with more or less flexibility, the appearance of certain companies testing this model, makes others wonder whether it would not be possible to adopt it".
