Today, March 13th 2023, a new regulation was approved that will allow operators licensed in Portugal to offer a new type of game of chance named Bank or Crash. This is the first time, since the national online gambling market was regulated back in 2015, that a new type of game has been approved by the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service ('SRIJ').
Since its enactment back in April 2015, the Legal Regime of Online Gambling and Betting ('RJO') provides for the possibility of authorizing new games of chance. Although this entails a lengthy and bureaucratic procedure (which requires the approval of a new regulation for the type of game and its submission to the technical barriers to trade procedure by the European Commission), the fact the Bank or Crash game has been approved has shown that it is possible to allow new types of games to enter the Portuguese market.
This is a positive sign and an open door for the potential upcoming approval of other games and for the consequent diversity and attractiveness of the national online gambling market. The Gaming Commission and SRIJ have taken an important step to build a more appealing market, and the operators should respond by presenting additional proposals of new types of games and by focusing their investment in the Portuguese market which still shows signs of growth.
