The COVID-19 pandemic imposed the implementation of several contingency measures by the Portuguese State, namely, the closure of the face-to-face appointments at the Foreigners and Border Service, from March 27 to May 4, as well as limitations on the number of appointments after its reopening.
This limitation of appointments as well as the air traffic constraints also motivated by the pandemic caused by COVID-19, led many foreign citizens, holders of Residence Permits, to be prevented from renewing their Residence Permits at Foreigners and Border Service as well as complying with the minimum periods of stay, even though the validity of the Residence Permits was extended until October 30th, 2020.
Therefore, in order to safeguard the rights of foreign citizens, the Government decided to extend again the validity of all the Residence Permits that expired from February 24 to March 31, 2021.
